Sunday 20 August 2006 from 12 noon
In the days leading to the 20th most time, effort and worry was about the expected bad weather. We arranged containers filled with water to counteract the wind on the gazebos, we ensured everybody could get under cover, and we were geared up to pull the plugs if it all got too wet. Then something happened and the clouds rolled away. The afternoon was dry, if a little breezy, and our supporters were able to take their ease on the grass.
As I write there's still some money to come in but already the total exceeds any previous year. Thanks are due to the many helpers, stallholders, sponsors and members of the public who supported the event. We were also fortunate to have the support of the Mayor of Hertford, Mrs Sally Newton, and Cllr Alan Burlton of East Herts District Council who, together with his wife, spent some time at the party.
The entertainment included Steve Ball's Drumnasium, a Scalextric exhibition and racing, Air Hockey, Skittles, Jugglers, Face Painting and balloons, Paradise Wildlife Park's animals, a Fire Engine.
The catering included The White Horse pub, Pimms and Margarita Slush Puppies, Thai curries, Barbecue and afternoon teas.
We were very grateful to the donors of nearly 30 raffle prizes. A list of donors can be found here.
Our team of helpers, barbecuers, gazebo erecters and dismantlers, book and plant sellers, scalextric marshalls, air hockey team managers etc etc worked tirelessly throughout the day. Security for the road closure was provided by a team from Phoenix Lions. A really big thanks to them for escorting vehicles and keping undesirables away!
I'm grateful to Adrian Foster of AVF Communications for his professional help with press releases etc. Mark Anguin of Blades Digital sponsored and produced the flyers.
And finally our sponsors, without whom I'd have been even more stressed than I was. Thanks are due to Hertford Town Council, Star Assistance, The Hertfordshire Grapevine, Hertford Planning Service, Y's Weight. Also, many thanks to Jim and Viv Thornton for the help and the donation.
